I've found that the best formation is 4-3-1-2. On your central midfielder, put a small backward arrow so that he drops deep to protect the back four and pick up the ball. You can also set him as a playmaker if he has high creativity. Put medium sized forward arrows on your right and left sided midfielders, set your tackling to Normal, play with the reasonably high width, and reasonably high freedom on the tactics screen.
